DAHDI is home

By johnnyvoip
Digium has made a move to rename their Zaptel project to DAHDI because of trademark issues (remember the Asterisk google ad issue before?)

DAHDI - Digium Asterisk Hardware Device Interface

Anyway, their move is to have a name that can be trademarked and wouldn’t have legal implications.

From their blog post: http://blogs.digium.com/2008/05/19/zaptel-project-being-renamed-to-dahdi/

Asterisk 1.6.0 will use DAHDI exclusively (it will not have support
for Zaptel
), although this will be done in a highly
backwards-compatible way so that disruption to existing dialplans and
configurations will be minimized.

Asterisk 1.4 will continue to have support for Zaptel, although it
will be enhanced to also transparently support DAHDI instead, and the
documentation (and default configuration files) will encourage new
users to use DAHDI instead of Zaptel.

Asterisk 1.2 will be unaffected by these changes.

Time will tell whether their move of Asterisk 1.6.0 not supporting Zaptel proves to be a step of moving forward or falling backward. Remember that Zaptel patches are available for Asterisk alternatives and Asterisk compatible cards. How soon will they support DAHDI?

We can only hope that the results are as assuring as the post.
